What our parents say

How did JAG Basketball help your child develop character?

My daughter Skylar joined JAG in middle school after hearing about the program from her male classmates. She was the original “JAG girl” – at the time she joined the program the only kids participating were boys. Coach Jelani was as tough on Skylar as he was the male players, which helped thicken her skin to prepare her for the rigors of high school basketball. The experience also helped her develop strength and confidence, as the expectations for her were no less than the expectations for the boys, and she had to learn to hold her own, both physically and mentally. She is a better, more determined young woman because of her experience with JAG.

How did JAG Basketball help your child develop as a basketball player?

Footwork and ball handling did not come naturally to Skylar. She was very lucky to train under Coach Jelani to develop and hone her skills. She played starting point guard her freshman and sophomore years at La Salle High School, and now plays shooting guard. Without Coach Jelani’s guidance and instruction, I don’t believe Skylar’s ball handling abilities would be even close to what they are today. He provided her with both the skills and confidence to succeed at her position.

What do you appreciate about coach Gardner?

Skylar and I both greatly appreciate Coach Gardner because he really invests in those who want to learn. He takes the time to teach players the right way to play basketball, and also serves as a positive role model in their lives. His basketball IQ is off the charts, and he is extremely motivating. He treats his players like family. Great basketball player, great coach, great human.
